After Receiving Only One Tony Nomination, Lombardi Sets Closing Date

After garnering only a single Tony nomination, football drama Lombardi, starring Dan Lauria and Judith Light, is set to close. Eric Simonson’s play about the life and times of legendary Hall of Fame football coach Vince Lombardi will play its final performance on May 22. At the time of its closing, Lombardi, directed by Thomas Kail, will have played 30 previews and 244 performances at Broadway’s Circle in the Square Theatre.

Light’s performance as Marie Lombardi earned the actress the show’s only Tony Award nomination (in the Best Featured Actress in a Play category). She was also honored with Drama Desk and Outer Critics nods.

“Lombardi was a story that we wanted to tell and an idea that we believed in,” producers Fran Kirmser and Tony Ponturo said in a statement. “We wanted to attract both an audience which had never set foot in a Broadway theater, and to satisfy the traditional theatergoer… We hope to continue to inspire new audiences through our upcoming production of Magic/Bird, based on the lives of Magic Johnson and Larry Bird.”

In addition to Lauria and Light, the production features Keith Nobbs, Bill Dawes, Robert Christopher Riley and Chris Sullivan.
